Lead Connections WNY supported efforts by property owners and contractors in Erie and Niagara Counties to create lead safe housing by providing lead hazard control services and supplies at no charge to qualified property owners. Environmental Education Associates partnered with the Erie County Health Department, housing agencies Belmont Shelter Corporation and Rental Assistance Corporation of Buffalo, Home Depot and Glidden Paints to create an effective process for community based lead hazard control.
The project began in 2003 in Erie County, and was expanded in 2004 to include Niagara County. A total of 1,600 housing units were enrolled, of which 704 underwent lead risk assessment. Lead hazard control was completed with clearance at 725 Units.
100 Homes
100 Homes for Lead Safe Kids works to create lead safe housing in the City of Buffalo, under a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo. Environmental Education Associates, in partnership with Family Environmental Health Resources (FEHR) and the Erie County Health Department will be providing training and supplies to create 100 lead safe homes by the of Spring 2010.
Lead hazard control activities are being conducted by the property owners themselves and by volunteers from the Iroquois Job Corps, Buffalo Board of Block Clubs, and the Mayors Summer Youth Program and through the Healthy Homes Workforce Development program, operated by EEA to qualify local unemployed or underemployed individuals for career opportunities.
